Kyra and Donovan stayed at the hospital for the rest of the day, until the sun began to dip behind the hulking hospital towers. Before they left, they visited with Jessica again and were happy to see her holding her baby. Her cheeks and lips had more color, and her mind was free of sedatives. There was laughter and happy hearts in her room.

Jessica waved her little sister over while Uncle Harold discussed plans the family was making for Christmas.

Kyra approached her bedside with a smile. Jessica gestured for her to lean closer.

She did, and her sister told her, “Did you know I died while I was having this baby?”

Kyra frowned, and her smile faltered a bit. “Yeah, I knew that,” she said softly.

“That’s why you came; y’all thought I was gonna die. Everybody did.”

Kyra shook her head. “Nah,” she said with a grin. “We knew you were gonna be alright. We prayed for you.”

Jessica bit her bottom lip. Kyra didn’t know if she had just learned what happened or if she was finally reacting to it. Hearing that your heart wasn’t beating for almost a whole television commercial can be a sobering experience.

“This little joker tried to take me out,” she said.

The troublemaker in question was asleep in her arms. Even in slumber, it was clear Gary Jr. loved the sound of his mother’s voice. The child was fully at peace.

Kyra smiled. “But you gotta forgive him, though. Him so cute.”

“Yeah,” Jessica agreed. “I don’t think I would be able to take that from an ugly baby.”

“Girl, you know you wrong for that!”

“I love you,” Jessica said with a sigh. “Thanks for coming.”

“You know I love you, too,” Kyra told her.

“What’d you think of Mama showing up?” Jessica asked her. “When I saw her, I thought I was looking at a ghost.”

Kyra nodded. “Me too. I don’t know what to think about her. I guess I’m glad to see her. At least we know she’s still alive.”

“Yeah,” Jessica agreed. “I doubt if she’ll ever come back to Little Rock, but you got a better chance of running into her in Overbrook Meadows. Did she tell you where she lives?”

“I already know she lives at the homeless shelter.”

“Are you gonna start, you know, trying to be around her and stuff?” Jessica wondered.

“She said she’s gonna make an effort to be in our lives,” Kyra reported. “I gave her my number. But I’m not gonna go looking for her if she doesn’t call.”

“Did you tell her how ridiculous that wig looked?” Jessica inquired.

Kyra laughed at that. “No. I couldn’t tell her that.”

“Shit, I did,” Jessica told her. “It’s bad enough she a crackhead. She don’t have to walk around looking like one!”
